Information provided by Michael Doran, who has visited the Bahamas many times since he lived on Grand Inagua as a child in the early 1950s. He earned the doctorate in geography from the University of Oregon in 1974 and has contributed to the scholarly literature on the West Indies.

I'm lost. This article lists New Providence as having the same area as Nassau, yet 80,000 more residents -- the exact same population as The Bahamas' total (according to the article). Something seems to have slipped through the cracks. – anna 12:08, 28 April 2011 (UTC)Reply[reply]
RESIDENTS
The most famous resident of New Providence is the Canadian professional tennis player Eugenie Bouchard. Bouchard is a former Wimbledon finalist (she lost to Petra Kvitova in 2014), who was once as once as high as number 5 in the WTA world rankings. She is also a successful model, appearing twice in the annual Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition, and a master of social media, with more than a million followers on Twitter. David Kemp 31/01/2019.
